Could a Food You Eat Every Day Be the Root of Your Digestive Issues, Joint Pain, or Skin Problems?

Updated: May 8

The top 10 food sensitivities to consider eliminating

Do you struggle with persistent digestive problems like bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort? Are you dealing with chronic joint pain or inflammation? Have you noticed skin issues such as eczema, acne, or rashes? These seemingly unrelated symptoms may actually have a common culprit: food sensitivities.

Food sensitivities can manifest in various ways, affecting not only your gut health but also your overall well-being.

Some common symptoms of food sensitivities include:

  • Digestive issues (bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation)

  • Joint pain and inflammation

  • Skin problems (eczema, acne, rashes)

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Fatigue and brain fog

  • Mood imbalances (anxiety, depression, irritability)

Uncovering Food Sensitivities

There are different approaches to uncovering food sensitivities, but my personal favorite is food sensitivity testing. While an elimination diet can be helpful, it can be challenging to determine specific sensitivities without the guidance of a test. Food sensitivity testing takes the guesswork out of the equation, providing clear insights into which foods may be triggering your symptoms.

The Elimination Diet Approach

If you prefer to explore food sensitivities on your own, an elimination diet can be a good starting point. I recommend following a Paleo-style diet that eliminates the most common food sensitivities, as well as gut irritants like lectins, for about 30 days. During this time, pay close attention to any improvements in your symptoms.

The top 10 food sensitivities to consider eliminating include:

  1. Gluten

  2. Dairy

  3. Soy

  4. Eggs

  5. Corn

  6. Peanuts

  7. Tree nuts

  8. Shellfish

  9. Nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes)

  10. Citrus fruits

After the 30-day elimination period, reintroduce each food one at a time, allowing a 2–3-day gap before trying the next one. This process will help you identify which foods may be contributing to your symptoms.

Addressing the Gut Microbiome

While removing food sensitivities can provide significant relief, it's important to recognize that they are often only part of the equation. Microbial imbalances in the gut, such as bacterial overgrowth or yeast dominance, can also contribute to chronic health issues.

For sustainable results, I recommend addressing both food sensitivities and gut microbial imbalances together. This holistic approach targets the root causes of your symptoms, promoting long-term healing and well-being.
